U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), 1989 - 1995. Work focused in the area of development and implementation of uses, applications of the Global Positioning System (GPS). Specialty focus area is in Differential GPS (DGPS) research and applications, getting these accepted by the Corps, and moving GPS technology out into the USACE districts. Research and work has also focused on precise deformation monitoring and engineering. Personally have received acclaim for the successful development and completion of the On-The-Fly (OTF) GPS technology. Participated in several National level studies concerning GPS. Performed basic research in the area of DGPS and GPS that assisted in the formulation of policy for theUSACE.
Defense Mapping Agency Hydrographic Topographic Center (DMAHTC), 1983-1989. Accomplishments focused on managing computer systems and data reduction. Supported the shift of DMA from use of Doppler systems at their worldwide sites, to the use of GPS at these sites and worked in testing the software switch over. Performed data reduction and computer system management functions.
Planned and led surveys throughout the Eastern Test Range, including sites within the USA, the Caribbean, as well as the Ascension Island in the South Atlantic Ocean. Most survey work was first order and accomplished using conventional traverse and triangulation techniques. Specialty surveys sometimes required the use of inertial systems, gravity, doppler and astronomic work. The surveys were often located in rather inaccessible areas, making logistics extremely important. Close coordination with representatives from foreign governments and military organizations was required.
Makah Indian Reservation, 1982-1983. Worked as tribal geologist on various projects in support or tribal activitites. Completed Environmental Impact Statement for the major watershed of the area. Updated maps of the reservation and logging areas using aerial photographs. Performed rudimentary field survey work for map and resource verification.
Dept. of Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, 1979-1982. Worked as Geophysical Technician. Performed geophysical surveys during exploratory cruises and associated laboratory work from data collected while at sea from magnetic and seismic survey work. Compiled maps from basic geophysical data and correlated this data with the dredged rock samples. Designed and built specialty equipment required for cruise work. Performed cruise logistics as well as basic petrographic analysis tasks on mafic and ultramafic samples. Performed dredging and underwater photography at depths of up to several thousand meters off the coast of Washington State. Also performed any necessary support work on land.
