Activity: The Department actively participates in FTAA
negotiations and in the interagency process for developing USG proposals
and negotiating positions.
Background:
At the Summit of the Americas held in Miami in December 1994, Western
Hemisphere Heads of State agreed to construct a Free Trade Area of the
Americas and to complete negotiations by 2005. The leaders also made
a commitment to achieve substantial progress toward building the FTAA
by 2000. The Office of International Policy and Programs coordinates
the Department’s involvement in the negotiations and has played
an active role in the interagency process for developing USG proposals
and negotiating positions, while ensuring that the interests of U.S.
suppliers of transportation services and the traveling public are represented.
