At Dreamy Draw – a name derived from the dizzying effects of mercury ore that was mined in the area – building of the Squaw Peak Parkway provided the opportunity to replace a pedestrian bridge with a new construction that transformed public works into public art.

For pedestrians, the new Dreamy Draw Pedestrian Bridge is a gateway to the residential area of Paradise Village and provides access across the Squaw Peak Parkway. For motorists, the bridge enhances the usual experience of daily commuting.

The metalwork span of the bridge, in red steel fencing, reflects the urban desert environment; its bold red color complements the landscape and makes reference to Arizona red rock, mercury oxide ore and the red doors of a nearby school. The geometric screening and framing create a lively, light-patterned experience for those traveling across the bridge. The whole project is a collaborative achievement of architect, artists, state and federal authorities, and residents.

JURY COMMENTS...

Freeway environments are replete with artless, humorless and natureless acts of designers and engineers. This projects says that cities, citizens, the federal government, the artist and the structural engineer can make a difference.

The punched metal, folded, faceted and telescoping forms are strong, structural and dramatic and compete beautifully in the intimidating and might scale of freeway environment. This steamy, red, moiré statement achieves it all with the light and heavy hand of the artist working every piece of metal into clear pattern and shape.
