Commissioned in 1993 by the United Pacific Railroad, the new Lathrop intermodal gate and terminal transfer facility is an exemplary intermodel system for the transfer of containers and trailers between rail and trucks. Lathrop is one of the world's most economical, energy efficient, innovative intermodal facilities. With the most advanced cargo handline and tracking features, functional convenience, safety, speed and accuracy that modern technology can provide, it is becoming the standard for world class intermodal facilities. At this facility, the innovative use of a computer information management system, OASIS, coordinates the inbound and outbound gate traffic, storage yard locations, and all movements of trains, trucks and cargo containers in the yard. The trucker's average stay in the yard has been reduced from hours to just 20 minutes.
