The historic Stone Arch Bridge is a pedestrian and bicycle trail link in the St. Anthony Falls Heritage Trail, which serves other trails that cross the Mississippi River along the central waterfront of Minneapolis. Built in 1883, the bridge served rail traffic for nearly one hundred years and was recognized as an important element in an historic Minneapolis flour milling, water power and commercial district.

During the restoration, the bridge's arch fill and stone ballast were removed to repair the tops of the arches and install a new waterproofing and drainage system. After repairs were made, new aggregate fill was placed over the arches. Concrete sidewalks for pedestrians and bicycles, safety railings and a walkway lighting system were installed. New approaches were constructed at each end to connect to the existing trails, and the landscape was cleared of unwanted growth collected through years of neglect.

JURY COMMENTS...

In converting this 19th century railroad bridge to a hike and bike trail, the St. Anthony Falls Heritage Board not only saved an historic structure but increased the recreational opportunities for the entire city of Minneapolis. The bridge becomes a key link in the St. Anthony Falls Heritage Trail, helping adjacent neighborhoods identify with the river. It is a model for using funds form the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 for community betterment.
