The island of Marathon is located in the heart of the Florida Keys, separating the Golf of Mexico from the Caribbean Sea. The airport was far busier than the deteriorating terminal building could adequately accommodate. In its place, a modest new terminal was designed to allow for several commuter carriers. The terminal and associated parking had to be build on a narrow strip of land between a major highway that runs through the island and the runway. Added to this site constraint, the area is home to the protected burrowing owl, which meant careful placement of new construction. Energy and water conservation requirements also had a significant influence on the design. The new terminal incluses covered areas to shelter passengers and visitors from the hot sun and intermittent heavy rains and hurricanes. The metal overhanding roofs are suggestive of the island setting and are easily maintained in their tropical environment. The terminal's detailing further reflects native island architecture by incorporating "Bahamas" shutters, ceiling fans and luch, tropical foliage.

JURY COMMENTS... Marathon Airport stands out for two reasons: its simple and orderly provision of spaces to comfortably house passengers, and its straightforward incorporation of the local Florida keys style. Few airports of this relatively small size go to these lengths. This project economically creates a dignity and sense of place not often achieved at airports of any style.
